Synopsis

Have you ever been involved in an epic love story where you wound up alone? Have you devoted yourself so completely to someone that you lost yourself in their abyss?

Patrick Greer spent the past five years revolving around El. He fought like hell to not feel the emotions for her that were hidden deep in his gut, until he couldn't anymore. He was so sure of them, of her, of what they were to each other, until he wasn't.

Patrick couldn't even imagine the things he'd done for her, with her and to her. El broke him.

He was a liar, a friend, a lover, a fixer, a runner and a killer.

Now he had to figure out who he was without her.

Excerpt
“You need to let her do it her way, Patrick,” Billy urged, softly but firmly. “This isn’t your battle to fight.”
“Isn’t it?” Patrick responded.
“No, it’s not.”  Billy rolled his glass in his hands.  “Listen, Patrick, I know that you feel extremely guilty about what happened with El, but it wasn’t your fault.  Jamie did this.  Jamie and the ATF.  This was out of your control.”
“I should’ve told her.”
“It’s easy to see that now, man.”
Patrick’s guilt fueled him; he didn’t know how to feel about her without it. “I know you may not understand this, but I need to help her do this.  I need to help protect her because I couldn’t do it that first year.”
“You helped her survive; she knows that. Even as mad as she is at you, you were the only one who helped her make it through that first year without Jamie.”
“It wasn’t just me.”
“Who else was it?”  Billy took a gulp of his drink.  “It wasn’t her fucking parents. I still don’t get how they just left her here. They never even bothered to make sure she was okay.”
“It wasn’t like that. I spoke with her dad or mom every day.  I was trying to let her be okay. She didn’t want to talk to them, so I made sure they knew she was okay.”
“But Patrick, she wasn’t okay.”
“Well, sometimes I’m not okay, but I don’t need my fucking mom to come help things; it’d just be worse. It seemed like it wouldn’t help her to lean on her parents and she didn’t want to talk to anyone who knew her with Jamie. I was trying to help… I just wanted to fucking help.”
“Sorry.” Billy shook his head. “I’m sorry, man, I didn’t mean to bring all this up.  I just wanted you to know this isn’t your fault and it’s not your responsibility to save her or fix her…or love her.”

I honestly don't know where to start. Having just finished Heart In Wire my heart actually hurts! From the first page right up until the last my heart has been heavy and hurting for Patrick. I am writing this review feeling very emotional and very very teary...R.L. Griffin you did it again, you fucked with my mind!! (and you still hold the honour of being the only author to make me curse in a review)

Once again, R.L. gives us a story that is filled with tension, heart-felt emotion and enough heat to melt your kindle without going into graphic detail and that is where the magic in her writing lies. This series has to be one of my all time favourite EVER and R.L. Griffin is right up there in my top 3 favourite authors.

Patrick's story is so not what I expected. I was expecting the story to pick up a little way into the future where Patrick, still struggling to cope with his love for Stella, finally gets the love and life he deserves. But I was forgetting one thing...the author is R.L. Griffin and no way was she gonna write something that was light, sweet and fluffy, oh no!!

Yes, we do get Patrick trying to move on from the' clusterfuck' that is his life but we also get the whole story of Patrick and Stella's life together, from when they first met, told in a series of flashbacks from Patrick's perspective and oh boy, it's so different from Stella's and I LOVED IT!!!

Now, I love Stella but she was quite selfish in the fact she wanted both George and Patrick's love but, as it seemed, on her terms even if she didn't realise what she was doing. She needed to know that Patrick would be there for her whenever she needed him (and he was, so many times) but she couldn't see it was breaking his heart seeing her playing happy families with George...without him. Stella may have been his person and vice versa but Patrick wasn't THE person for Stella and it broke his heart, damn near destroying him.

"Heartbreak seems like a stupid thing to call what I feel. You can fix a break. I feel like she shredded my fucking chest. I mean, my chest actually hurts."

It's bad enough that Patrick is trying to rid Stella from his mind and the almost crippling hold she has over his heart but he's also dealing with the guilt of what happened to his once-best friend, and Stella's former fiancee, Jamie. As the story unfolds we get to see the bond and friendship between Patrick and Jesse strengthen. (I love that man!) And we get a better insight into Patrick's best friend, and housemate, Billy. I adore Billy. He is so wise and deep, and had Patrick and Stella's relationship summed up from day one. Billy is a man of few words but when he does speak he either imparts wise pearls of wisdom and advice to Patrick or blurts out something rather inappropriate but funny, usually to the shock and amusement of his friends.

"You're holding her hand because you want to; she's holding yours because she needs to." ~ Billy

Just when things start looking up for Patrick and life is starting to look good, tragedy strikes and brings Stella back into his life. Can he find the strength he needs to let go of her once and for all or will he let this hold Stella seems to have on him destroy his chance of a happy life and him in the process?

I broke my heart a few times for Patrick, I don't mind telling you and I'm still feeling very fragile. Heart In Wire is an emotionally charged and very fitting conclusion to Patrick's story and I thank you R.L. for writing it. Now can we have Billy's and Jesse's story, pleeease? Billy really does have a story to tell, doesn't he? *gets on knees and pleads*

If you have read all 3 By A Thread books, including the Mending novella, then I urge you not to miss out on this wonderful story, go 1-click it now. Andrea gives this a rating of...
