The Curse Keepers Blog Tour

Title: The Curse Keepers
Author: Denise Grover Swank
Release Date: November 19, 2013

ABOUT THE CURSE KEEPERS

The wall between our world and that of vengeful spirits has protected humanity for more than 400 years. It’s about to come crashing down.
Ellie Lancaster has lived her whole life by the site of the mysterious Lost Colony of Roanoke, the Virginia settlement that vanished without a trace around 1590. Only the descendants of the two men who banished the spirits of an enemy tribe from the material realm know what really happened to the colony. Ellie is one of those descendants—a Curse Keeper. Her father took pains to teach her what he knew of the curse and the responsibilities of its guardians. He taught her that if the two Curse Keepers ever meet, the curse will be lifted, the gate will open, and the raging Native American spirits will be unleashed to seek their revenge.

Despite her father’s seriousness, Ellie has always taken the legend for a harmless fairy tale. Until she meets the darkly handsome, but downright infuriating, Collin Dailey and realizes everything she was told is true. For when they meet, it’s like the air is sucked from the room. Collin’s presence is electrifying… and it’s not just attraction Ellie feels, but the inexorable pull toward her destiny. The prophecy is real, and now Ellie and Collin must battle supernatural forces and their loathing—and passion—for each other to set things right.

The Curse Keepers are all that stand between the world and its destruction.

Simone's Review
*ARC received in return for an honest review

I  love paranormal reads and when I read the blurb on this story I was intrigued as I thought this one was going to be different to others I have read, a story with ancient curses and trapped Native American gods.

When Ellie Lancaster was a child her father told her about legends and a curse that will become a big part of her life in her adult years, and tried to teach her about her heritage as a Curse Keeper. But after her mother's death when a intruder broke in and murdered her, Ellie was so traumatised that she mentally blocked out all that her father had told her
. Ellie's father is now suffering with Alzheimer's Disease and she needs this vital information to try and piece the puzzle together to shut the gate before the Native American spirits, who have been trapped for 400 years descend and seek their revenge.

Collin Dailey, a Curse Keeper, is drawn into town to seek the other Curse Keeper of this generation. He is a whole lot of sexy, mean and moody but also really arrogant. To be honest I really didn't warm to his character even though he was hot. I didn't like the way he treated Ellie. But then at the beginning of the story Ellie did not seem to care much for him either, even though there was a definite spark between the two when they first met. They put their feelings aside as both Ellie and Collin know they have to work together and fight against time with only seven days to seal the gate.

Collin has taken his role of Curse Keeper very seriously his whole life but has made some choices along the way that has lead him into a very seedy way of life. One of his criminal connections is a criminal boss who seems over eager to get his hands on Ellie. He thinks she is something of value to him, as he sees how over protective Collin is of her which is very out of character for Colin - he never cares or gets close to any woman.

I began this story not really liking Ellie or Colin very much but Ellie grew on me the further I got in to the story. She stopped whining and became more kick ass, I do like a strong leading lady!! I thought Collin was just very obnoxious and uncaring at times. I find it hard to believe that they can have any kind of normal loving relationship.

I enjoyed The Curse Keepers, particularly the Native American mythology. The characters  are very well written and developed as is the story. The ending is set up nicely for the next book in the series.

If you like paranormal romance with mystery and some unexpected twists and turns then this is the book for you.

Teaser

Mark sat in his car staring through the windshield. Any minute now, Cadence, dressed in graduation robe and cap, would round the corner with her brother and Fanny. All he wanted was to see her smile.
He knew her parents didn’t show up. They made their intentions clear three nights ago when Cadence called home to speak to her mother. After she hung up, she told Mark she didn’t care that they refused to attend, but he awoke later that night to the sounds of her soft cries. She was curled up lying close to the edge of the bed, far away from him. He reached out to touch her, then stopped. Something told him not to, that it’d be disastrous if he tried to comfort her. So he left her alone. The next morning she was bright and cheery and as fake as he’d ever seen her.
He drummed his fingers on the steering wheel. “Please smile. Please smile. Please smile.”
He thought back to the first time he saw her really smile. She grinned at him on the side of Highway 28, but it wasn’t until she sat on a metal bench in the bus parking lot on the first day of school that he saw a real smile. She giggled about the names she’d been calling him, revealing pretty teeth with one imperfection. She had a calcium deposit on her eye tooth. Yeah, he’d noticed. And he recalled feeling like a total creep for liking it so much.

Andrea's Review
*ARC received in return for an honest review

What can I say? My emotions are all over the place...AGAIN!!

After reading Good I didn't know what to think. Half of me was shouting 'NO!! That's all wrong!' and the other half was rooting for the couple. But, I DID know that I couldn't wait to find out what happened between Mark and Cadence.

Better picks up right where Good finished, hits the ground running and doesn't stop til the end. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. I even woke up through the night and had to read a few pages as I was desperate to find out what happened next!

Cadence graduates to college and Mark has to find a new job after he loses his job when news of their affair is exposed. Everything seems okay on the outside but they are both struggling with their feelings and to keep their relationship from going under.

As hinted in Good, Mark has a secret from his past that he's keeping from Cadence. He's putting off telling her because he fears she may hate him and leave him for good when she finds out. Mark's also struggling to provide a home for them both and pay for Cadence's college fees since her Dad has seen fit to cut off all financial support as well as emotional support from both himself and her mother.

Cadence is now 18, attending college and trying to fit in. All she wants is to act like a normal 18 year old student but she also wants to be grown up and fit into Mark's world with his grown up friends.

Although he is happy with just the two of them in their own little world, Mark recognises that Cadence is lonely. She misses her mother and misses her best friend Avery, who stopped speaking to her when her parents found out about Mark and Cadence. And she also misses her faith and not being able to attend church on Sundays for fear of upsetting her parents.
Mark tries his best to give her what she needs and encourages her to follow her own path but sometimes, that's just not enough.

Tragedy strikes within her small network of friends and family and certain events see Cadence begin to spiral out of control. Can she stop before it's too late and she loses Mark forever? Can Mark reach out to Cadence in time and save her from the self destruct button she seems so hell bent on pushing?

Better is filled with guilt, secrets and tons of tense, heated, heart-filled emotion. My heart was pounding and my palms were sweaty most of the time as I rode the roller coaster of emotions right along side Mark and Cadence. I laughed, sighed, shouted and cried, oh God I cried!! And let's not forget the hot scenes between Mark and Cadence. Whether they were arguing or making up they damn near blew up my kindle! They certainly turned up the heat, phew!

I found the ending very fitting but I didn't want it to end. At times I wanted to knock their heads together to get them to talk and I wanted to shout at them for the way they were both behaving BUT I really did like them throughout the whole story.

This is not your run of the mill, conventional love story and that's what makes it a great story. I know I'm probably quoting many others when I say S. Walden makes you think outside the box and I, for one, can't wait to read more from her.

Another page turner and a definite must read.

Since the accident, heiress to the multi-billion dollar Montgomery Empire, Evangeline has always feared the media attention that comes with having the Montgomery name and would immediately give it all up if it meant the chance to bring back her loved ones. Witty, extremely arrogant but undeniably good-looking are only a few words Evangeline can use to describe the New York Yankee’s hot-shot. The notorious bad boy― well-versed at playing the game both on and off the field― isn't fazed about the media circus following his every move and couldn't be anymore different to the quiet, shy girl that she is. It's not until they're away from the cameras that Evangeline begins to see the real man hiding behind the cocky facade- one that's hurt and haunted by a dark and terrible secret.

What will happen once Evangeline finds the courage to reveal what really happened on the evening her mother and brother died?
